Artist Statement
The closest people in my life, past and present, have helped shaped me as a person and inspired the direction of my art. My earliest human muses were my kids though I eventually expanded to adult figures as well. Over time, I wanted to portray them more realistically, to capture the gestures from everyday life. Then, surfaces became gradually rougher and markings became bigger and bolder. The faces and postures were from the culture where I came from though but the emotions, they evoke transcend my Korean culture and race.

Eventually my other love - music - began overtaking my interest in portraying human figures. Subtle emotions are expressed through the texture of the surfaces, whether it is a violin, cello, or other. I leave the rough markings, lumps, and tears produced in the clay during the process of creation, so the viewer can also participate in the process and share in the emotions as it progresses. My artwork offers a sense of belonging as it is a place to communicate, share, and connect with an intimate process of creation and memory. My artworks aren’t snapshots capturing a moment in time, but rather the embodiment of a common lasting reality.
